Car Free Sundays are organized all over the world as a way to bring communities together in the roads and streets of our cities, towns and villages. Roads and streets are a key part of our community infrastructure. Everyone pays for them, but only some people use them on a daily basis. Car Free Sundays help to demonstrate various alternative uses of this great community resource.

I have participated in the first (and now annual) Cyclovia event in Tucson, AZ.

It was quite fun and it included a road circuit, rather than just a section of street closed off to traffic.
I see from the web that Winnipeg has also hosted a cyclovia.
Just wanted to thank you and all the volunteers for another wonderful Car Free Sunday. We enjoyed the chance to stroll down the middle of the streets, watching the skateboarders, families biking, kids drawing with chalk. We patronized a downtown business and supported the food concessions run by a couple of groups. I will be writing to Courtenay Council as well to encourage them to have more of these days. Wouldn’t it be great if 5th was closed every Sunday!
Thanks for your positive feedback Kathie. The more people that follow your example and write to Courtenay Council or local media to express similar sentiments, the easier it will become to grow the event. It sure was nice to see 5th Street closed, with families enjoying each other and the downtown core.
